I was transferred to the active reserve for the next six years. I lived in Rockaway Beach, NY and I was assigned to Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn. When I reported to Fort Hamilton I explained that I lived in Rockaway and Fort Tilden in Rockaway was just minutes from my home. Could I be transferred there which would save a lot of driving time. Within a week I was assigned to an JD Truck Training Centre anti-aircraft battery at Tilden. I would be trained as a lineman stringing communication wire. I could hardly wait.
To meet the CDL class-a requirements on your own all you have to do is go and take the CDL test at your local Secretary of State office. They will give you a written test and a practical test. The teat cost you a 100 dollars. It's cheaper than going through a school and gets you your CDL a lot faster.
I remember when the Truck driving school was teaching me how to meet all the CDL requirements. They taught me how to back up, shift and do lane changes and everything. But the real deal of getting loaded, to driving through the mountains is another thing.
Ride aware - A car turning left across your path causes the most frequent accident. Three-fourths of motorcycle accidents involve collisions with other vehicles, the majority caused by the other driver. Intersections can be bad spots, so slow down and be prepared to react.
First I like to point out the legal side. This is a BIG ONE. Being a truck driver is fun and you can make a lot, or a ton of money. So what do I mean legal? Because we both know that you need a CDL license to drive... When I say legal we are looking at your MVR (Motor Vehicle Record). Why is this important? If you have 1 too many violations most trucking companies will not hire you. This is what the HR Truck Licence schools do not tell you.
This job's main advantage is that you get to see places where you have never been. Even Lr licence though it might scare you at first, with a map and precise directions you shouldn't worry about it. From the seaside to the mountains and deserts, you will see everything. If you go in different states and meet new people, you will learn new accents and customs. It is all about making a living and at the same time live your life. When you will grow old, and you will have grandchildren, you'll be able to tell them that you've seen many places in your life, and even help them with geography.
Besides the compensation for the work you perform, there are other reasons to consider this type of work. Namely because most trucking companies will also provide health/life insurance and retirement plans. Every companies compensation plan and benefits will differ, so be sure to review them carefully.
